Self-reliance (自立)

Everyone has heard the word “self-reliance”. Emerson wrote a famous essay about it. He felt that peopleshould trust in their own ability.They should think and act for themselves. Like many such terms, this one has no real meaning for meuntil it was demonstrated to me in real life.

Last year I met a blindgirl named Gail. She was extremely slender and weak, but she alwaysinsisted on finding her way around the school by herself.When she sat in a room with several of us, there wassometimes a(n) uneasy silence, because we thought shemight resent our acting too cheerful and thoughtless in her presence. On such occasions, she would saysomething casual or show us how fast she could write. She never asked foranyone’s pity. She truly relied on herself.
